Compound Sentences

در درس جملات ساده گفتیم که یک جمله ساده جمله ایی است که یک فعل دارد و یک مفهوم کامل را بیان می کند به همین دلیل به آن (independent clause) می گویند.

جملات مرکب از بیش از دو جمله ساده یا independent clause تشکیل می شوند که با حروف ربط (coordinating conjunction) و برخی نشانه گذاری ها مثل (؛ – ، ) به هم وصل می شوند.

حروف ربط در این جملات (coordinating conjunction) به سه دسته تقسیم می شوند: 

  1. for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so 

که پیش از همه آنها همواره کاما قرار می گیرد،

و پس از nor جمله به شکل پرسشی در می آید:

I can’t speak English, nor can I read it.

.من نه می توانم انگلیسی حرف بزنم و نه می توانم انگلیسی بخوانم

مثال:

Joe waited for the train, but the train was late.

I looked for Mary and Samantha at the bus station, but they arrived at the station before noon and left on the bus before I arrived.

Mary and Samantha arrived at the bus station before noon, and they left on the bus before I arrived.

Mary and Samantha left on the bus before I arrived, so I did not see them at the bus station.


2. Either … or, neither… nor, not only… but also

و پس از not only و  neither جمله به شکل پرسشی در می آید:

NEITHER…NOR

Not only did Michael grill a steak for Tiffany, but he also prepared a hot-dog for Rocket, her dog.

We can either go to the movies or stay inside and watch Netflix.
The sound was either a firework or a gunshot.
Either you stay or I leave.

The view at the top of mountain was neither spectacular nor very visible.
When it comes to movies, I like neither comedies nor romances.
Neither will the workers go off strike, nor negotiate until they receive a higher pay.


3. therefore, consequently, thus, accordingly, else, otherwise, moreover, beside, in addition, furthermore, also, however, still, nevertheless, nonetheless

دقت داشته باشید هنگام نوشتن پیش از تمام این حروف نقطه ویرگول (؛) می گذاریم و پس از آنها کاما (،)

He was very persuasive; accordingly, I did what he asked.
She is my neighbor; she is also my best friend.
I like the job; besides, I need the money.
She had a fever; consequently, she stayed at home.
You should stop smoking; furthermore, you should do it at once!

We wanted to arrive on time; however, we were delayed by traffic.
She is very intelligent; moreover, she is very ambitious.
They are proud; nevertheless, I like them.
The ascent was dangerous; nonetheless, he decided to attempt it.
We should consult them; otherwise, they may be upset.

We went shopping, then we had lunch.
If you are sure, then I must believe you.
was nervous; therefore, I could not do my best.
